John Isner vs Alexei Popyrin - 3/10/19 ATP Tour - Indian Wells Open Pick, Odds, and Prediction

Susan Mullane-USA TODAY Sports

American tennis superstar, John Isner will begin his 2019 ATP Indian Wells in the second round where he will face Alexei Popyrin from Australia.

Alexei Popyrin enters this match having beaten Jaume Munar in the previous round. It was a convincing performance by Popyrin as he won in straight sets. During the victory, Alexei Popyrin returned serve exceptionally well as he won 45% of his receiving points which allowed him to break Munar’s serve on 4 occasions. It is important to note that Popyrin lost 2 service games which is a potential problem as it will not be as easy to break serve against John Isner.

On the other side of the coin, John Isner received an opening round bye due to his high seeding. Isner enters this match in exceptional form as he has made the semifinals of the last 3 tournaments that he has played. Isner’s serving has been exceptional over the past few weeks as he has played 11 matches since the Australian Open and has only lost 6 service games. John Isner has a very strong record at the Indian Wells Open as he finished second at this event in 2011 while also winning the doubles tournament at this venue last season. Isner has an exceptional record while playing in the United States and it seems like the home crowd support boosts his performance. With that in mind, it will be very tough to beat John Isner in this tournament.

This will be the first time that Alexei Popyrin and John Isner will be playing each other at an ATP event.

As far as this match is concerned, I am going to pick John Isner to win. Isner is in exceptional form having made 3 successive semifinals. Furthermore, Isner has a great record at this venue and is playing on home soil. With all that taken into consideration, I see John Isner winning with some ease.

Pick:
John Isner
