The Line: -- Over/Under:
John Isner and Frances Tiafoe meet in the first round of the 2016 US Open.
John Isner hopes to get back in good form after losing the finals in Atlanta and getting bounced early in Cincinnati. Isner remains a consistent top-25 player in the world but is still prone to his hiccups and continues to play such draining, long matches that make it hard to succeed in grand slams where you have to win three sets. The good news is Isner is playing in a tournament he’s comfortable in and the fast hard court favors his game like no other player in the field. Isner hasn't lost in the first round of a grand slam since the 2014 US Open. Isner has won five of his last eight matches on hard court.
Frances Tiafoe is making his third grand slam appearance at 18 years old and would love nothing more than to get the biggest win of his young career. Tiafoe is fresh off winning the Granby Challenger and also made the final in the Lexington Challenger. Tiafoe has won nine of his last 11 matches overall and is just gaining valuable experience just by being in this tournament. Tiafoe could make this match interesting if he gets off to a fast start and gets the American crowd behind him. Tiafoe has never made it out of the first round in a grand slam. Tiafoe has won nine of his last 11 matches on hard court.
This will be the first time these two meet on the tennis court.
Isner’s power game and serve gives the best players in the world fits. I can only imagine what’s going to happen with an 18-year-old who has very little ATP matches under his belt.
Isner should make this match rather quick.
