John Isner and Hyeon Chung meet in the Friday in the quarterfinals of the Men's Clay Court Championship.
John Isner is coming off a straight sets victory over Denis Kudla that took two tiebreaks to decide. Isner is looking to use this tournament to kind of get back on track after getting off to a rocky start in 2016. Isner did a wonderful job of holding his serve and striking the ball well in his last match, but he’s been hit or miss overall with quick exits in the Miami Masters and Rio De Janeiro. Still, Isner is the top seed in this tournament for a reason and could turn his season around if he can win his second U.S. Men's Clay Court Championships. Isner has made the finals in Houston in two of his last four appearances.
Hyeon Chung is coming off a three set victory over Tommy Paul, and he’s played six sets in this tournament so far. Chung has split his last six singles matches, as he’s still looking to find his footing at the pro level at just 19 years old. Chung has shown a lot of potential with his tennis IQ and shotmaking ability, but it just comes down to experience and getting over that hump in order to take his career to the next level. A win over a top-15 player in the world would certainly be a feather in the cap of the young South Korean. This is the furthest Chung has ever made it playing in Houston.
This will be the first time these two meet on the tennis court.
I like Chung’s potential, but he’s going to struggle with the service power of Isner, who usually overwhelms some of the elite tennis players. Chung is still way too wet behind the ears to beat somebody of Isner’s caliber.
Look for Isner to inch closer to another title in Houston.
