Tennis | Karen Khachanov vs John Isner
Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

John Isner has made it into the third round of the 2018 ATP Paris Masters where he will be playing Karen Khachanov from Russia.

Karen Khachanov enters this match in great form as he recently won the 2018 Kremlin Cup in Moscow. Khachanov continued his form in the first two rounds of this event as won both matches in dominant fashion. In his last fixture, Khachanov beat Matthew Ebden in straight sets. It was a simple victory for Karen Khachanov as he won the first set 6-2 and led the second set 2-0 before Ebden retired from the match. During that victory, Karen Khachanov returned serve exceptionally well as he won 4 return games. This match will be a tougher challenge for Karen Khachanov as he is playing an opponent ranked in the top 10 in the world.

John Isner had a tough opening round match which he managed to win in 3 sets after he lost his second set in a tiebreaker. The ability to win return games has been a big issue for John Isner lately as he has only averaged 1 return game win per match since the end of the US Open. Isner is a very experienced player and has an exceptional record at the Paris Masters as he finished second at this event in 2016 while making the semifinals in 2017 and 2011. Isner seems to always find a way to win at the Paris Masters and he showed that in the second round and I am expecting to see the same in this match.

John Isner and Karen Khachanov have played twice in the past with Khachanov winning on both occasions. The most recent match was at the Rogers Cup this season where Karen Khachanov won in straight sets.

This should be a very interesting match to watch and it will be determined by Isner’s ability to win return games. If John Isner can break Karen Khachanov’s serve enough times, he should win. While there is no recent evidence to suggest this, I am going to pick Isner to win. Isner seems to always find a way to get the win at the Paris Masters and after a gritty win in his last match, I see him getting another victory.
