John Isner and Kyle Edmund meet in the third round of the 2016 US Open.

John Isner is coming off a four set victory over Steve Darcis that took 41 games to decide. Isner needs to do a better job of putting his opponent away when he has the chance, as he played an extra set in his second round match that didn’t need to be played. The main reason Isner hasn’t had much grand slam success is the lack of energy in the later rounds due to working so hard early. Isner needs to be rock solid in matches like this one. Isner has made the fourth round of a grand slam three times in the last four appearances. Isner has won six of his last eight matches on hard court.

Kyle Edmund is coming off a straight sets win over Ernesto Escobedo that took 32 games to decide. Edmund has yet to drop a set this tournament and has now won eight of his last 10 sets overall. Edmund is coming off a match in which he won 86 percent of his first serve points, a percentage that gives him a chance in this match if he can match it. Edmund has a chance if he can hold serve and force Isner to work harder than he’d like given his workload already. Edmund also has a chance to make the fourth round of a grand slam for the first time in his career. Edmund has split his last 10 matches on hard court.

These two have met once in the past, which was in this year's French Open, a match Isner won in straight sets. The match took 30 games to decide.

The fact Isner beat Edmund in straight sets earlier this season on clay is quite telling, as it’s only going to be harder on hard court. The experience is also a big factor in this match.

I expect Big John to make the fourth round.
