John Isner and Ruben Bemelmans meet in the second round of the 2018 tennis Wimbledon.
John Isner is coming off a straight sets win over Yannick Maden that took 33 games to decide. In the victory, Isner won 82 percent of his first serve points and 67 percent of his second serve points. Isner was typical Isner in his first round victory, as he hit 28 aces and won 77 percent of his overall service points. When Isner is getting so many free points with his serve and not giving even a look at break points, he’s possibly the most frustrating player on the planet to play. However, the key to that victory is it was an effortless three set win, which gives the big guy plenty of rest to be effective in later matches. It’s the marathon matches with four tiebreaks that usually ends up killing the tall American. Isner hopes to make the third round of a grand slam for the 10th time in his last 13 tries. Isner has won five straight matches on grass court.
Ruben Bemelmans is coming off a five sets win over Steve Johnson that took 58 games to decide. In the victory, Bemelmans won 78 percent of his first serve points and 41 percent of his second serve points. Bemelmans almost gave the match away after having a two set lead, but he dug deep by hitting 59 winners and breaking on six of his 19 break chances. Bemelmans entered this tournament in very poor form, but his third grand slam victory of the year has to give him some sort of confidence boost to get back on track. The main question for Bemelmans at this point is how much he has left in the tank, as even with a day off, it’s not easy to rebound from a five set marathon match. Bemelmans has a chance to make the third round of a grand slam for the third time in his career. Bemelmans has lost two of his last three matches on grass court.
These two have played once, which was in the 2012 Atlanta Open, a match Isner won in three sets. The match took 29 games to be decided.
Having a quick three set victory is key for a guy like Isner, as it leaves plenty left in those legs for matches like this. It also helps that Bemelmans is coming off a lengthy performance where he’s sure to feel the effects of even after a day of rest. Isner should have a considerable advantage here and blast his way to victory with his power serve that was on point in the first round.
Isner makes the third round of the Wimbledon for the fourth time.
