John Isner vs Taylor Fritz - 01/09/2019 ATP Tour - Auckland Open Pick, Odds, and Prediction

Susan Mullane-USA TODAY Sports

American tennis superstar, John Isner will begin his 2019 season in New Zealand where he will face Taylor Fritz at the ATP Auckland Open.

Taylor Fritz enters this match having beaten Marius Copil in the opening round. It was a tough match for Fritz although he managed to win in 3 sets after losing the opening set. During the win, Taylor Fritz served exceptionally well as he hit 12 aces and only lost 1 service game. That being said, Fritz was very poor while receiving serve as he won less than 33% of his receiving points. This is a massive area of concern as John Isner is an exceptional server could potentially exploit Taylor Fritz’s weakness.

On the other side of the court, John Isner is set to play his first match of 2019. Isner had a strong 2018 season as he broke into the top 10. Isner’s biggest asset last season was his serve and he will cause Fritz many problems with it. John Isner has an amazing record at the ATP Auckland Open as he has won this tournament twice in the past. With such a strong record at this venue, John Isner will be feeling very confident as he heads into this match.

John Isner and Taylor Fritz have played twice in the past. John Isner has won on both occasions. The most recent match between these two players was in 2017 at Wimbledon where John Isner won in straight sets.

All in all, I am picking John Isner to win this match. While Taylor Fritz will be feeling good after his opening round win, I see him struggling to win return points. Isner is an exceptional server and I don’t see how Taylor Fritz can improve enough to challenge the top seeds serve. With an exceptional record at the ATP Auckland Open, I see John Isner making the third round of this tournament with ease.
