Susan Mullane-USA TODAY Sports

John Millman and Dominic Thiem meet in the second round of the 2018 tennis German Open.

John Millman is coming off a straight sets win over Jan-Lennard Struff that took 21 games to decide. In the victory, Millman won 78 percent of his first serve points and 54 percent of his second serve points. Millman won 67 percent of his total service points and managed to save all three of his break points. Millman entered this tournament playing hit or miss tennis, but he’s coming off one of his more complete performances as of late and it’s one that could get him back on the right track. Of course, Millman has the home crowd behind him and that always helps as well. As long as Millman can serve well and make up for his subpar return ability, he gives himself a shot to make a deep run in his home tournament. Millman has split his last six matches on clay court.

Dominic Thiem is coming off a straight sets win over Corentin Moutet that took 18 games to decide. In the victory, Thiem won 67 percent of his first serve points and 64 percent of his second serve points. Thiem won 65 percent of his total service points and converted on five of his seven break chances. Thiem didn’t look like the player he was in the Wimbledon who had to retire two sets into the match. In fact, Thiem looked like the player he’s been on clay all season long, a guy who hits his spots with confidence and has been deadly with his return. Thiem has clearly proven that he’s at his best on this surface, and he should be considered a favorite to make his fifth final appearance of the season based on recent results. Thiem has won 11 of his last 12 matches on clay court.

These two have played twice, both meetings were in 2016, and Thiem won both matches. The most recent match was in the 2016 US Open, a match Thiem won in five sets.

Milan is coming off one of his better showings of the season, but he’s been very inconsistent this season and can struggle at times to hold serve. Thiem has been one of the best players in the world on clay and even has a couple of recent wins against Nadal on this surface.

Thiem should win this match in straight sets given how effective he’s been on clay all year.

Pick:
Dominic Thiem
