The Line: -- Over/Under:
Jordan Thompson and Frances Tiafoe meet in the second round of the 2019 tennis Libema Open.
Jordan Thompson is coming off a three sets win over Tommy Paul that took 26 games to decide. In the victory, Thompson won 78 percent of his first serve points and 53 percent of his second serve points. Thompson won 67 percent of his total service points and converted on four of his eight break points. Thompson got 57 percent of his first serves in play and saved one of his three break points. Thompson really took control of the match after dropping the first set and did just enough with his return to close the deal. Thompson has now split his last eight matches that have gone the distance. Thompson hopes to win at least two matches for the fourth time in his last six tournaments. Thompson has lost four of his last six matches on grass court.
Frances Tiafoe is coming off a straight sets win over Joao Sousa that took 21 games to decide. In the victory, Tiafoe won 86 percent of his first serve points and 52 percent of his second serve points. Tiafoe won 73 percent of his total service points and converted on three of his 12 break points. Tiafoe got 62 percent of his first serves in play and faced just one break point. Tiafoe won five of the first six games and ended up winning all seven points in the second set tiebreak. It was a much needed performance from Tiafoe, who entered this tournament on a three-match losing streak, and it’s now about consistency for the young American. Tiafoe hopes to win at least two matches for the fourth time in his last eight tournaments. Tiafoe has won five of his last seven matches on grass court.
These two have played once, which was this year in Acapulco, a match Tiafoe won in three sets. The match took 28 games to be decided.
Thompson is probably playing the better tennis at this very moment, as it’s hard to trust Tiafoe at this stage. While extremely talented, you just don’t know which player is going to show up. Unforced errors usually are the deciding factor for Tiafoe, as he can really hit himself out of key games. With that said, I’m still siding with Tiafoe in this match, as if he hits the ball anywhere close to what he did in his opening match, he should edge this out.
Tiafoe was in complete control against Thompson earlier this year after dropping the first set.
