Jordan Thompson and Marcel Granollers-Pujol meet in the second round of the 2019 tennis Hall of Fame Open.

Jordan Thompson is coming off a frustrating five set first round loss in Wimbledon to Nick Kyrgios, a match where momentum didn’t mean anything. The positive for Thompson is that he went toe-to-toe with a really talented player, and he’s had some success on grass this year, which includes making the final in Netherlands. As long as Thompson trims down the unforced errors and does a better job of racking up the free points with the first serve, he gives himself a real chance to do some damage in this tournament. Thompson has won six of his last eight opening matches on the main tour. Thompson has split his last six matches on grass court.

Marcel Granollers-Pujol is coming off a straight sets win over Prajnesh Gunneswaran that took 16 games to decide. In the victory, Granollers-Pujol won 89 percent of his first serve points and 78 percent of his second serve points. Granollers-Pujol won 86 percent of his total service points and converted on four of his five break points. Granollers-Pujol got 76 percent of his first serves in play and didn’t face a single break point in a victory that took just 46 minutes to complete. If Granollers-Pujol is going to serve at that level moving forward, he’s capable of beating anybody in this field. Granollers-Pujol looks to win back-to-back matches on the main tour for the first time since Houston back in April. Granollers-Pujol has won five of his last six matches on grass court.

These two have played once, which was this year in Delray Beach, a match Thompson won in straight sets. The match took 19 games to be decided.

Granollers-Pujol is a dangerous opponent if he’s going to serve the way he did in his last match. The problem is Granollers-Pujol has had issues sustaining success and it’s why he’s failed to qualify for main tour tournaments and has spent a lot of time in challenger play. Thompson has been the sharper player and has had some impressive moments on grass this season. Thompson also beat Granollers-Pujol earlier this year, which helps as well.

Thompson rolls to the quarterfinals.
