Juan-Martin Del Potro and Filip Krajinovic meet in the quarterfinals of the 2018 tennis China Open.
Juan-Martin Del Potro is coming off a straight sets win over Karen Khachanov that took 23 games to decide. In the victory, Del Potro won 76 percent of his first serve points and 47 percent of his second serve points. Del Potro won 69 percent of his total service points and saved two of his three break points. Del Potro bombed 11 aces and got 73 percent of his first serves in play, which has been key for him during this historic stretch of tennis he’s been playing. Del Potro has now won 21 of his last 25 sets and at this point should probably be considered the favorite to win this tournament. There’s nothing Del Potro can do wrong at the moment. Del Potro has won 10 of his last 12 matches on hard court.
Filip Krajinovic is coming off a straight sets win over Feliciano Lopez that took 22 games to decide. In the victory, Krajinovic won 66 percent of his first serve points and 42 percent of his second serve points. Krajinovic won 59 percent of his total service points and produced four breaks on 14 break points. Krajinovic could obviously improve his service percentage, but each of his last nine victories have been decided in straight sets, so his winning formula has been working. Still, Krajinovic can’t win this match if he keeps giving away so many break points. Krajinovic has a chance to win three matches in a single tournament for the first time since Dubai. Krajinovic has 15 career wins over top-20 players in his career. Krajinovic has split his last six matches on hard court.
These two have played once, which was in this years Miami Open, a match Del Potro won in straight sets. The match took 18 games to be decided.
I’ve said it for months now during these write-ups. Don’t bet against Del Potro in his current form. Unless Del Potro is wearing down or showing signs of his wrist flaring up again, he should be considered the favorite to win and will probably do so in straight sets. There’s nothing Krajinovic can do with Del Potro that he wasn’t able to do in Miami.
Del Potro rolls again in straight sets.
