Juan Martin Del Potro has made it into the third round of the 2019 ATP French Open. The Argentine superstar will now play against Jordan Thompson from Australia.

Jordan Thompson has had a very solid tournament and he enters this match having beaten Ivo Karlovic in 4 sets in the previous round. During the win, Thompson served exceptionally strongly as the Australian won 81% of his service points which allowed him to win 100% of his service games. The receiving was not the strongest for Thompson as he conceded 23 aces and won only 34% of his return points. That being said, Thompson managed to win 3 return games which was enough to ensure the victory. This is expected to be a significantly tougher match for Thompson as he is playing against the number 8 seed.

Looking at Juan Martin Del Potro, the Argentine is looking back to full fitness. Del Potro has been struggling with injury throughout the 2019 season but considering he has won 2 marathon matches in this tournament, it looks like he is at a good fitness level. In the previous round, Juan Martin Del Potro defeated Yoshihito Nishioka in 5 sets. In the match against Nishioka, Del Potro received serve in a very strong manner. Juan Martin Del Potro won 43% of his receiving points which allowed him to break his opponent’s serve on 9 occasions. The French Open has been a strong tournament for Juan Martin Del Potro as he has made the semifinals twice in the past. With that in mind, it seems like Del Potro is going to be a tough player to beat.

This will be the first time that Juan Martin Del Potro and Jordan Thompson will be playing against each other at an ATP event.

Jordan Thompson has had a good tournament and looked in decent form. That being said, I see the Australian losing this match simply because Del Potro is a player from another level. Juan Martin Del Potro is the 8th seed and his record at this venue is supreme considering he made the semi-final last season. Del Potro looks fit and is playing good tennis. I see the Del Potro being too good for his opponent in this match.
