Juan-Martin Del Potro and Richard Gasquet meet in the second round of the 2018 tennis Shanghai Masters.

Juan-Martin Del Potro is coming off a loss in the Beijing final, a performance in which he failed to deliver a victory as a -715 favorite. Even with the poor showing, Del Potro has won 15 of his last 18 matches and 23 of his last 29 sets played. Del Potro has been serving at an elite level since the US Open, which is why his recent showing comes as such a surprise. If Del Potro can return to form and put his recent loss behind him, he should be considered a favorite to bring home the title here continue making a run for the top ranking in the world. Del Potro hasn’t lost an opening match in a tournament since Shanghai back in 2016, and he obviously followed that up last year with a trip to the semifinals. Del Potro has won 10 of his last 12 matches on hard court.

Richard Gasquet is coming off a three sets win over Leonardo Mayer that took 22 games to decide. In the victory, Gasquet won 64 percent of his first serve points and 58 percent of his second serve points. Gasquet won 63 percent of his total service points and produced four breaks on five break points. Gasquet lost the first set in just seven games and followed that up by losing three combined games in the final two sets. Gasquet is quietly turning his season around, as he’s now won five of his last seven matches and is fresh off a semifinals appearance in Tokyo. It’s not always pretty with Gasquet, but he continues to show his competitiveness and will to win. Gasquet has 31 career wins over Del Potro, with two of them coming this year. Gasquet has won three of his last five matches on hard court.

These two have played eight times and Del Potro has won six of those matches. The most recent meeting was in London of 2013, a match Del Potro won in three sets. Gasquet hasn’t beaten Del Potro since the Boodles Challenge in 2013.

Gasquet is playing improved tennis as of late, but he still lacks that extra something special to beat the top tier players. We saw it when he tried to finish off Kei Nishikori in Tokyo. Gasquet is solid at his older age, but he can’t take his game to another level to beat these elite players consistently. Despite his recent performance, Del Potro has been arguably the best player this year overall.

Del Potro should win this match in straight sets.
