Juan Martin Del Potro and Stefanos Tsitsipas meet in the second round of the 2018 tennis Rome Masters.

Juan Martin Del Potro enters this tournament with a 22-5 record on the season, but he’s coming off a rough loss to Dusan Lajovic in the Madrid Masters. Del Potro had nothing on his return and won just 50 percent of his second serve points. Even with the loss to a player who hasn’t had a winning season in ages, Del Potro is playing some of the best tennis of his life and should still be rather confident. Del Potro is serving at a really high level and has made at least the semifinals in three of his last four tournaments. This is Del Potro’s second appearance in the Italian Open since the 2014 season. Del Potro has split his last eight matches on clay court.

Stefanos Tsitsipas is coming off a one set win over Borna Coric that took five games to decide before he retired. In the victory, Tsitsipas won 82 percent of his first serve points and 60 percent of his second serve points. Tsitsipas is coming off one of the better wins of his young career at 19 years old, but it’ll be interesting to see him moving forward, as it was quite clear Coric wasn’t 100 percent before retreating. Still, Tsitsipas has put together some nice wins over quality players in what has been his breakout season and can still take his game to another level by getting a higher percentage of first serves in play. Tsitsipas has a chance to make the third round of a ATP World Tour Masters 1000 for the first time in his career. Tsitsipas has won six of his last eight matches on clay court.

This will be the first ever meeting between these two players.

Tsitsipas has proven this year that he’s no pushover and capable of hanging around with some of the veteran players on tour. He also didn’t have to work much in his first round match. The problem is Del Potro is playing some of the better tennis of his life and will eat that serve alive if Tsitsipas’ continues to struggle getting his first serves in play.

Del Potro probably wins this match in straight sets.

Pick:
Juan Martin Del Potro
