Julia Goerges and Daria Kasatkina meet in the quarterfinals of the 2018 tennis Charleston Open.
Julia Goerges is coming off a straight sets win over Naomi Osaka that took 22 games to decide. In the victory, Goerges won 71 percent of her first serve points and 56 percent of her second serve points. Goerges won 44 percent of her return points and produced four breaks against one of the hotter players to start the season. Goerges has to be better with her second serve, but she was aggressive and confident out there on the court and is now in her fourth quarterfinal of the year. Goerges came into this tournament losing three of her last four matches, so this success is a welcome sight for the 29-year-old German. Goerges has won five of her last seven quarterfinal matches. Goerges has won six of her last eight matches on clay court.
Daria Kasatkina is coming off a straight sets win over Irina-Camelia Begu that took 15 games to decide. In the victory, Kasatkina won 69 percent of her is first serve points and 43 percent of her second serve points. Kasatkina had very little trouble in her round of 16 victory and managed to win 63 percent of her return points. Kasatkina can be cleaner on her service game, but she’s produced a combined 13 breaks in her last two matches, and that’s a winning formula in any tournament. After reaching the finals in Indian Wells and her fourth quarterfinal of the year, Kasatkina is a confident player at the moment and has to view this as a chance to make another deep tournament run with a favorable draw. Kasatkina has won each of her last four quarterfinal matches. Kasatkina has won seven of her last 10 matches on clay court.
These two have never played each other on the tennis court.
Goerges is coming off an impressive win over Osaka, so she can’t be taken lightly, but the bottom line is she hasn’t played good tennis up to this point and can really struggle with her service game. With the way Kasatkina is returning and playing defense, she should be able to eat those mistakes up. Goerges has had major issues serving in all of her recent losses, and that’s not going to help her in this matchup against a borderline top-10 player in the world.
Kasatkina reaches the semifinals in straight sets.
