The Line: -- Over/Under:
Julia Goerges and Simona Halep meet in the quarterfinals of the 2019 tennis Qatar Open.
Julia Goerges is coming off a three sets win over Alison Riske that took 30 games to decide. In the victory, Goerges won 72 percent of her first serve points and 49 percent of her second serve points. Goerges won 62 percent of her total service points and converted on five of her 14 break points. Goerges has been very consistent with her serve this tournament and is coming off a match in which she had 12 aces. That’s a number that could get Goerges to the title match if it continues. Goerges has 16 career wins over top-10 players, with two of those wins coming last year. Goerges has won seven of her last eight matches on hard court.
Simona Halep is coming off a straight sets win over Lesia Tsurenko that took 17 games to decide. In the victory, Halep won 67 percent of her first serve points and 45 percent of her second serve points. Halep won 57 percent of her total service points and converted on five of her nine break points. Halep still has a ways to go to return to the player she was a year ago, as she’s still making far too many unforced errors, which includes six unforced errors in her last match. However, Halep is still having great success with her return and her fiery competitive spirit allows her to win the big points that turn the match. Despite hiccups here and there, Halep has won six of her last seven matches. Halep has won four of her last five matches on hard court.
These two have played twice and Halep won both matches in straight sets. The matches took place in Miami in 2016 and Madrid in 2014.
This is a dangerous match for Halep, especially if Goerges is going to serve the way she did in her last match. Halep still isn’t 100 percent and those unforced errors will hurt her against better competition. With that said, Halep is still the safe pick here and had no trouble with Goerges in the previous four sets they’ve played against one another.
I’ll still side with Halep in this match, picking her again in straight sets.
