German tennis superstar, Julia Gorges is set to face Eugenie Bouchard in the quarterfinals of the 2019 WTA Auckland Open in New Zealand.
Julia Gorges had a strong second round performance as she won in straight sets. During the win, Gorges returned serve exceptionally well as she won over 50% of the points played during her opponents serve which allowed her to win 4 breakpoints. In addition to a strong return, Gorges also served well as she only lost 2 service games in the entire match. Gorges finished the 2018 season strongly and she looks in very good form in this tournament.
On the other side of the coin, Eugenie Bouchard had a decent second round performance as she battled for 3 sets to secure her win. Bouchard returned serve exceptionally well as she won 9 break points but her serve was a real point of concern. Throughout the match, Bouchard hit 8 double faults and lost 7 service games. While her return game bailed her out, Bouchard will need to improve her serve significantly if she wishes to compete against Julia Gorges.
Eugenie Bouchard and Julia Gorges have played twice in the past with both players winning on one occasion. The most recent match between Bouchard and Gorges was played last season at WTA Luxembourg where Julia Gorges won.
Both of these players are greatly experienced and have huge fan followings around the world meaning we should expect a good tennis match. As far as the result is concerned, I am going to pick Julia Gorges to win. Gorges has been playing much better tennis when compared to Bouchard. Furthermore, Bouchard’s serve looks very fragile and I see Gorges being too good to not exploit on such an obvious weakness. I see Julia Gorges making the semi-finals of this tournament.
