World number 9, Karen Khachanov has made it into the second round of the 2019 ATP Halle Open in Germany. At this stage of the tournament, Khachanov will play against Jay-Lennard Struff from Germany.
Karen Khachanov won his opening match in straight sets as he defeated Miomir Kecmanović. During the victory, Khachanov served with great effect as he hit 10 aces and won 75% of his service points. Khachanov won 91% of his service games and 2 return games to secure the victory without much difficulty.
Karen Khachanov has been in decent touch as he had a strong French Open where he made it into the quarterfinals. During the French Open, Karen Khachanov defeated Juan Martin Del Potro. Khachanov has a good serve and is good at the net so he should enjoy the grass courts in this tournament.
On the other side of the coin, Jay-Lennard Struff enters this match following a straight sets victory against Laslo Dere. It was a solid display by Struff as he impressed with his serving. Struff won 80% of his service points which allowed him to win all of his service games. In addition to his serving, Struff also returned serve well as he broke his opponent’s serve on 2 occasions. Playing in Germany should give Struff a boost as he will have the support of the crowd. While results have gone in Struff’s favor in this tournament, the German will know that this will be a tough match as he is playing against the number 3 seed.
Karen Khachanov and Jay-Lennard Struff have played each other twice in the past with both players winning on one occasion. The most recent match between these two players was in 2016 where Karen Khachanov won in 3 sets. Struff’s victory against Khachanov was in 2013.
Taking everything into consideration, I am going to pick Karen Khachanov to win this match. Jay-Lennard Struff has played well in this tournament but he is yet to play against the quality of Khachanov. Karen Khachanov has been in good form and he looks confident following his French Open campaign. The quality of Khachanov is greater than Struff and I see the Russian superstar winning this contest with some ease.
