Karen Khachanov and Rafael Nadal meet in the third round of the 2018 tennis US Open.

Karen Khachanov is coming off a straight sets win over Lorenzo Sonego that took 30 games to decide. In the victory, Khachanov won 90 percent of his first serve points and 57 percent of his second serve points. Khachanov won 76 percent of his total service points and saved all four of his break points. Khachanov hasn’t been broken once through six sets in this tournament and has combined for 19 aces. Khachanov is one confident player at the moment and has really thrived on hard court this season. Khachanov has a chance to make the fourth round of a grand slam for the fourth time in his career. Khachanov has never made the fourth round of the US Open. Khachanov has won eight of his last 10 matches on hard court.

Rafael Nadal is coming off a straight sets win over Vasek Pospisil that took 27 games to decide. In the victory, Nadal won 84 percent of his first serve points and 50 percent of his second serve points. Nadal won 75 percent of his total service points and saved four of his five break points. Nadal also had just 16 unforced errors in his two hour victory. Nadal has now won 13 straight sets and will remain damn near impossible to beat if he keeps his unforced errors extremely low. Nadal has made at least the fourth round of a grand slam in each of his last eight appearances. Nadal has been bounced before the fourth round (2015) of the US Open once since 2006. Nadal has won seven straight matches on hard court.

These two have played four times and Nadal has won all four meetings in straight sets. The most recent meeting was in this years Canadian Open, a match that took 23 games to decide.

I said in my last write up, Nadal was my pick to win the tournament before it started, and he’s done nothing through two matches to change my mind. As for this match, you need to look no further than the head to head, as Khachanov has never even taken a set off Nadal through four matches.

Nadal marches to the fourth round of a grand slam for the ninth straight time.

Pick:
Rafael Nadal
