Karen Khachanov and Stan Wawrinka meet in the second round of the 2019 tennis Rogers Cup.

Karen Khachanov is coming off a first match loss in Washington and enters this tournament splitting his last eight matches overall. In his last effort, Khachanov won 69 percent of his service points, was broken twice and had four double faults. Khachanov has had issues with his second serve as of late and the unforced errors have also piled up more than usual. While more than capable of getting our of this funk, Khachanov is in extremely shaky form right now to say the least. Khachanov has lost his opening match six times since Miami. Khachanov has split his last six matches on hard court.

Stan Wawrinka is coming off a straight sets win over Grigor Dimitrov that took 20 games to decide. In the victory, Wawrinka won 86 percent of his first serve points and 40 percent of his second serve points. Wawrinka won 67 percent of his total service points and converted on three of his 11 break points. Wawrinka got 59 percent of his first serves in play, faced just two break points and hit 12 aces. Wawrinka is always going to be a tough out when he’s hitting those aces, and he usually controls the pace well on hard court where his power shots thrive. Wawrinka looks to win back-to-back matches for the first time since the French Open. Wawrinka has split his last six matches on hard court.

These two have played twice and Wawrinka has won both meetings in straight sets. The most recent meeting was Doha of this year and the other match was last year in St. Petersburg.

Khachanov is in awful form right now, and he’s running into a player who has made light work of him twice on hard court. Wawrinka is playing some of his best tennis since returning from injury and usually plays his best on the bigger stages. With a match under his belt and the aces flying, Wawrinka has to love his chances here.

Wawrinka makes the third round in Montreal
