Karolina Pliskova and Anett Kontaveit meet in the third round of the 2019 tennis Rogers Cup.
Karolina Pliskova is coming off a three sets win over Alison Riske that took 31 games to decide. In the victory, Pliskova won 82 percent of her first serve points and 55 percent of her second serve points. Pliskova won 71 percent of her total service points and converted on four of her four break points. Pliskova got 58 percent of her first serves in play, saved six of her seven break points and hit 11 aces. Pliskova is going to be a tough out in this tournament if she’s able to get double-digit free points. Pliskova looks to win two straight matches for the fifth time in her last six tournaments. Pliskova has won six of her last seven matches on hard court.
Anett Kontaveit is coming off a straight sets win over Carla Suarez-Navarro that took 16 games to decide. In the victory, Kontaveit won 68 percent of her first serve points and 35 percent of her second serve points. Kontaveit won 54 percent of her total service points and converted on five of her 11 break points. Kontaveit got 59 percent of her first serves in play and saved eight of her 11 break points. Kontaveit was able to save some energy with the retirement of Navarro after playing a first set that nearly took an hour. Kontaveit looks to win three straight matches for the first time since making the final in Stuttgart. Kontaveit has nine career wins over top-10 players, with one of those wins coming this year. Kontaveit has won six of her last seven matches on hard court.
Pliskova won both meetings against Kontaveit, which includes a three sets win this year in Indian Wells. The other win was in straight sets in Stuttgart.
Kontaveit was able to push Pliskova when they met earlier this year, but she’s going to have to serve a lot better to have a chance here. Pliskova is safe to back when she’s serving well and piling up the free points the way she did in her last match. When the power serve is working and she’s hitting her spots, Pliskova is capable of beating anybody you put in front of her.
I like Pliskova to make the quarters.
