The Line: -- Over/Under:
Karolina Pliskova and Barbora Strycova meet in the third round of the 2018 tennis Eastbourne International.
Karolina Pliskova is coming off a straight sets win over Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova that took 27 games to decide. In the victory, Pliskova won 67 percent of her first serve points and 50 percent of her second serve points. Pliskova could certainly be better with her second serve and her return, but she’s coming off a match in which she hit 12 aces. Pliskova is obviously at her best when working her first serve and getting a ton of free points, and she was back to her normal self in her opening match. We’ll see how long that continues, as Pliskova looks to reach her seventh quarterfinal appearance of the season. Pliskova has won six of her last eight matches on grass court.
Barbora Strycova is coming off a three sets win over Donna Vekic that took 17 games to decide. In the victory, Strycova won 75 percent of her first serve points and 62 percent of her second serve points. Strycova managed to win 70 percent of her total service points and was broken just once in her victory. Strycova has managed to kind of turn her season around during the grass court season, as she was on a massive losing stretch heading into Birmingham, but she’s found some recent success that includes serving well and playing with some pep in her step. This will be the ultimate test, however, as its a big step up in competition, and Strycova has just three wins over top-10 players since 2017. Strycova has won four of her last five matches on grass court.
These two have played four times and Pliskova has won three of those matches. The most recent match was in this yeas Australian Open, a match Pliskova won in straight sets. only win over Pliskova came in Birmingham of 2016.
The jury is still out on Strycova at this point, as she was awful coming into grass court play, and wins over subpar players doesn’t move the needle much. Pliskova is always at her best on hard court, but she hit double-digit aces in her last match. When she’s doing that, she’s tough to beat.
I like Pliskova to reach the quarters.
