The Line: -- Over/Under:
Karolina Pliskova and Maria Sharapova meet in the third round of the 2018 tennis French Open.
Karolina Pliskova is coming off a three sets win over Lucie Šafářová that took 26 games to decide. In the victory, Pliskova won 74 percent of her first serve points and 37 percent of her second serve points. Pliskova managed to win 61 percent of her total service points and produced 13 aces in her second round victory. While clay isn’t the best for Pliskova’s service game, she’s going to be a tough out if she continues to get free points and gets her first serve in play at a high percentage. Few can beat Pliskova when she’s serving at such a high level. Pliskova hopes to make the fourth round of a grand slam for the sixth time in her last seven tries. Pliskova has won six of her last eight matches on clay court.
Maria Sharapova is coming off a straight sets win over Donna Vekić that took 22 games to decide. In the victory, Sharapova won 62 percent of her first serve points and 51 percent of her second serve points. Sharapova won 49 percent of her return points and produced six breaks in her second round victory. Sharapova continues to pile up the unforced errors and isn’t as dominant with her serve as you’d like to see, but she continues to find ways to win, which is all that matters truly. However, Sharapova has to be sharper with her game in order to beat better competition. Sharapova has 95 career wins over top-10 players, but only two of those have come since 2016. Sharapova hopes to make the fourth round of a grand slam for the 10th time in her last 11 tries. Sharapova has won nine of her last 11 matches on clay court.
These two played once, which was in the 2015 Davis Cup, a match Sharapova won in straight sets. The match took 19 games to be decided.
Sharapova is going to have a hard time winning this match in her current form, as her serve isn’t where it needs to be. She allows her opponents to hang around far too often and gets very little on her second serve. Pliskova is serving at a high level and has improved her return the last couple of years. Until Sharapova can be trustworthy with her serve, she’s going to have a hard time against top tier players.
Pliskova advances here.
