The Line: -- Over/Under:
Karolina Pliskova and Mihaela Buzarnescu meet in the third round of the 2018 tennis Wimbledon.
Karolina Pliskova is coming off a straight sets win over Victoria Azarenka that took 18 games to decide. In the victory, Pliskova won 73 percent of her first serve points and 64 percent of her second serve points. Pliskova won 70 percent of her service points despite hitting just two aces. Pliskova got 74 percent of her first serves in play and didn’t face a single break point. When Pliskova can dominate a match without getting so many free points, she’s next level good. The aces are cool and sexy, but Pliskova has outplayed two opponents without having to produce monster, unreturnable serves, which is positive news moving forward. Pliskova hopes to make the fourth round of a grand slam for the sixth time in her last eight tries. Pliskova has won four of her last five matches on grass court.
Mihaela Buzarnescu is coming off a straight sets win over Katie Swan that took 15 games to decide. In the victory, Buzarnescu won 54 percent of her first serve points and 62 percent of her second serve points. Buzarnescu managed to win 61 percent of her return points and converted on six of 10 break chances. Buzarnescu will have to serve much better if she’s going to win this match, but her return skills have to give her some sort of confidence, as she’s produced 10 breaks in her last five sets. Of course, this will be a much steeper test than previous ones, but a win here will be one of the biggest of Buzarnescu’s career. Buzarnescu hopes for back-to-back grand slam fourth round appearances, as she made the fourth round of the French Open, the first time ever making it out of the first round in a grand slam. Buzarnescu has won four of her last five matches on grass court.
These two have played once, which was in 2012 challenger play, a match Pliskova won in three sets. The match took 31 games to be decided.
Buzarnescu has been sharp in her first two wins, but she’s not serving well enough to compete with the best in the world. She also won’t have the same return success against Pliskova as she did against lesser players. It’s also only a matter of time before Pliskova starts bombing double-digit aces, which can really break the spirit of a player.
Pliskova wins this match in likely straight sets.
