|Date & Time||Tuesday September 4, 2018, 8:00 PM (EDT)|
The Line: -- Over/Under:
Karolina Pliskova and Serena Williams meet in the quarterfinals round of the 2018 tennis US Open.
Karolina Pliskova is coming off a straight sets win over Ashleigh Barty that took 20 games to decide. In the victory, Pliskova won 70 percent of her first serve points and 54 percent of her second serve points. Pliskova won 64 percent of her total service points and saved all night of her break points. Pliskova has yet to drop a set this tournament and has been broken just three times in her last three matches. You’d like to see Pliskova get more free points on her serve like she’s capable of, but she’s in a good position regardless as long as she doesn’t face many break points. Pliskova hopes to make her third career grand slam semifinal and second in the US Open. Pliskova is 2-3 in career grand slam quarterfinal matches. Pliskova has won five of her last seven matches on hard court.
Serena Williams is coming off a three sets win over Kaia Kanepi that took 25 games to decide. In the victory, Serena won 81 percent of her first serve points and 54 percent of her second serve points. Serena won 69 percent of her total service points and hit 47 winners. Serena was tested considering she won the first set 6-0, but she won 16 of 17 first serve points in the third set and sprayed winners left and right. The fact Serena proved she can still dig deep and raise her game to another level when needed is a positive for the six-time US Open champion. Serena hopes to make the semifinal of a grand slam for the 12th time in her last 13 matches. Serena hasn’t lost a grand slam quarterfinal since the 2013 Australian Open. Serena hasn’t lost in the quarterfinals of the US Open since 2007. Serena has won five of her last six matches on hard court.
These two have played three times and Pliskova has won two of those meetings. The most recent match was in the 2016 US Open, a match Pliskova won in straight sets. Serena’s only win over Pliskova came in the 2014 Stanford Classic. The other match was a 2015 exhibition in Asia, which was one set that a half hour.
Pliskova obviously has the power to match Serena and has the belief considering she beat her in this setting a couple of years ago. However, Serena being tested in her last match and coming out with the win only makes her better and increases her confidence. With the way Serena is using the full court and spraying winners, Pliskova will do a ton of running in this match, something she’s not comfortable with.
Serena reaches another US Open semifinal.
