Karolina Pliskova and Svetlana Kuznetsova meet Friday in the semifinals of the 2017 Indian Wells Masters.
Karolina Pliskova is coming off a straight sets win over Garbine Muguruza that took 26 games to decide. In the victory, Pliskova won 54 percent of her first serve points and 52 percent of her second serve points. Pliskova proved she’s capable of winning a match without her serve being on point, as she lost 33 service points and was broken five times in her last match. Pliskova has to be confident knowing she can dig deep and find other ways to win rather than relying on free points and a dominant serve. Pliskova has 14 career wins over top-10 players and has a chance to get her third already this season. Pliskova also hopes to make her 19th career singles final and third already this season. Pliskova has won 10 of her last 11 matches on hard court.
Svetlana Kuznetsova is coming off a straight sets win over Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova that took 17 games to decide. In the victory, Kuznetsova won 81 percent of her first serve points and 75 percent of her second serve points. Kuznetsova has been dominant in her last two matches, as she's lost a combined 10 games and lost just 16 points on her first serve. If Kuznetsova is going to come anywhere close to those numbers in this match, she’ll have a great chance to win her 18th career singles title. Kuznetsova has 56 career wins over top-10 players, but none have come this year. Kuznetsova hopes to make her 40th career singles final and first since the 2016 Kremlin Cup. Kuznetsova has won seven of her last eight matches on hard court.
These two have split their only two meetings with Kuznetsova winning in the 2016 WTA Championships and Pliskova winning in the 2016 Cincinnati Masters. Both matches were decided in three sets. This will be the second match on outdoor hard court.
With the way these two are playing and the past two matches, you can expect a long tennis match and a complete toss-up in the third set. In the end, I trust Pliskova’s service game more than anything and think that’ll be the deciding factor in this match. She also showed she can win even when she’s not dropping aces left and right. That’s scary.
I give a slight edge to Pliskova in this match.
