Tennis | Fernando Verdasco vs Kevin Anderson
Danielle Parhizkaran-USA TODAY Sports

South African tennis superstar, Kevin Anderson, has made it into the semifinals of the 2018 Erste Bank Open in Vienna where he will play Fernando Verdasco from Spain.

It has been an interesting tournament for Kevin Anderson as he won his second game via retirement as Borna Coric retired during the second set of their quarterfinal match. Considering Anderson won his second round match in a similar way, it means that the South African superstar has only played one full match while in Vienna. While this should not be a disadvantage since these players get plenty of court time, it will mean that Anderson is fresh and ready for this match. It has been a good few months for Anderson as he has continuously made deep runs at tournaments but having not won a title since February, he will see this as a great opportunity since he is the highest-ranked player left in the tournament.

On the other side of the coin, Fernando Verdasco has had a very strong tournament as he has beaten the likes of Kyle Edmund. It has been a good few months for Verdasco as he made deep runs at the US Open and Shenzhen Open. It was a decent win for Fernando Verdasco in the quarterfinals as he beat Gael Monfils via retirement. Verdasco received serve well against Monfils as he won 4 return games before his opponent retired. This will be a much tougher match for Verdasco as it will be the first time the Spaniard is playing a top 10 opponent this tournament.

Fernando Verdasco and Kevin Anderson have played 8 times in the past with Anderson winning on 3 occasions and Verdasco winning on 5 occasions. The most recent match was at the Paris Masters in 2017 where Anderson won.

All in all, I am picking Kevin Anderson to win. Anderson is higher ranked and has had an easier road to the semifinals so he should be fresher for this match. With an impressive recent run on his side, I am picking Kevin Anderson to make the final of the tournament.
