Kevin Anderson and Joao Sousa square off Thursday in the quarterfinals of the 2016 Nice Open.
Kevin Anderson is coming off a straight sets win over Diego Sebastian Schwartzman that took 22 games to decide. Anderson is just trying to get his form back as he’s now lost five of his last seven singles matches. Anderson has been dealing with shoulder issues and hasn’t had a normal work schedule for quite some time, as he’s had just four singles matches since Delray Beach. When healthy and in good form, we know Anderson is one of the better players in the world, and despite his struggles, he’s still top-20 at the moment. Anderson looked good in his recent match, but he does need as many under his belt before the French Open in hopes of knocking off rest.
Joao Sousa is coming off a three set win over Victor Estrella Burgos that took 29 games to decide. Sousa has played nine sets this tournament and is starting to put together consistent performances with wins in six of his last eight singles matches. Sousa has battled back his last two matches after dropping the first set, and he’s proven he can hang with good competition, as he beat Jack Sock and took Rafael Nadal to three sets in the Madrid Masters. Sousa is currently in the top-30 for the first time in his career and a win here would just continue his best run of the season. Sousa has won seven of his last 12 singles matches on clay court.
This will be the first time these two meet on the tennis court.
Anderson and the plus money is very inviting, but he’s not 100 percent yet and is still struggling to get back to even decent form. Sousa is a fighter, is laying for a lot more and has recently shown he can hang with good tennis players.
I like Sousa to advance to the semifinals.
