Cornet vs. Bertens
|Date & Time||Friday April 6, 2018, 11:00 PM (EDT)|
The Line: -- Over/Under:
Kiki Bertens and Alize Cornet meet in the quarterfinals of the 2018 tennis Charleston Open.
Kiki Bertens is coming off a straight sets win over Fanny Stollar that took 18 games to decide. In the victory, Bertens won 76 percent of her first serve points and 54 percent of her second serve points. Bertens cruised in her last match, winning 67 percent of her total service points and wasn’t broken once. Bertens has yet to drop a set this tournament, which isn’t much of a surprise given that clay is her favorite surface, and she’s won 18 of her last 19 sets overall on clay. If Bertens continues to play this clean, she’ll have a shot to reach her first final of the 2018 season. Bertens has split her last eight quarterfinal matches. Bertens has won nine of her last 10 matches on clay court.
Alize Cornet is coming off a three sets win over Caroline Garcia that took 29 games to decide. In the victory, Cornet won 67 percent of her is first serve points and 58 percent of her second serve points. Cornet ended up losing a frustrating first set, but she buckled down and dominated the final two sets of the match. Overall, Cornet won 46 percent of her return points and produced six breaks. It was quite a performance from the 28-year-old and the type of showing that could turn her season around. Cornet will be a tough out if she brings the same energy she played with in the final two sets of her last math. Cornet has lost each of her last five quarterfinal matches. Cornet has won six of her last seven matches on clay court.
These two have played four times and Cornet has won three of those meetings. The most recent match was in the 2016 Cincinnati Masters, a match Cornet won in straight sets. Bertens only win over Cornet came in the 2014 Luxembourg Open. All four matches between these two have been decided in straight sets.
I like the momentum Cornet got from winning that match against Garcia, and you have to like the head to head numbers on her side as well. Cornet has won six of eight sets against Bertens and is playing really clean tennis overall. Cornet is also sharp defensively, which is going to give Bertens and her subpar service game some issues.
I like Cornet to advance to the semifinals.
