Dutch tennis superstar Kiki Bertens is set to play at the 2019 WTA China Open. Kerber will begin her tournament in the opening round where she will play against Donna Vekic from Croatia.
Kiki Bertens last played at the Wuhan Open where she was eliminated in the third round by Aryna Sabalenka. While the loss would have been disappointing, Bertens lost to a very strong player and the result would have been acceptable. That being said, the fortunes have turned for Bertens as her good run of form seems to have abandoned her since the start of the North American leg. Kiki Bertens has not reached the quarterfinals of a tournament since the start of the Rogers Cup which took place at the start of August. Bertens seems to be lacking confidence she has been handed a tough draw at this event as she is playing a very strong opponent in the opening round.
Looking at Donna Vekic, the Croatian has been in decent touch over the past few months. Donna Vekic made the quarterfinals of the US Open where she defeated the likes of Julia Gorges. It was a very strong North American leg for Donna Vekic as she also managed to reach the semifinals of the Silicon Valley Classic. Vekic was eliminated during the opening round of the Wuhan Open but considering her recent form, she will be confident in her ability to do well at this event.
Kiki Bertens and Donna Vekic have played each other 5 times in the past. Vekic has won on 3 occasions while Bertens has won twice. The most recent match was earlier in the season at the St Petersburg Open where Kiki Bertens won in straight sets. Vekic last defeated Bertens at the Brisbane International which took place in January.
Despite her ranking, I see Kiki Bertens losing this match. Bertens has struggled over the past few months and she has a very tough opening round match. Donna Vekic has been in outstanding form and she has been playing good tennis for a length of time. I see Donna Vekic eliminating the number 8 seed in the opening round.
