K. Bertens -350 / J. Larsson +250
World number 4, Kiki Bertens will be playing at the 2019 WTA Rosmalen Grass Court Championships in the Netherlands. Bertens will begin her campaign against Johanna Larsson from Sweden.
Kiki Bertens had a very disappointing French Open campaign as she had to retire in the second round due to illness. It would have been a great disappointment to Bertens as she was a genuine contender to win the French Open title. Kiki Bertens had a very strong clay court season as she made the semifinals of the Italian Open and Stuttgart Open while winning the Madrid Masters. The clay season is finished for Bertens as this she begins her grass court season at this event. Grass is considered to Kiki Bertens’ weakest surface as she is yet to win a grass court title. That being said, the Rosmalen Grass Court Championships gets played in Kiki Bertens’ home country which should give her a boost as she will have the full support of the crowd.
On the other side of the court, Johanna Larsson was also eliminated in the second round of the French Open. Larsson lost in straight sets against Garbine Muguruza to end a very poor clay season for the Swede. Johanna Larsson only won 2 matches in the entire clay season. It was surprising to see Larsson performing so poorly on clay as she has a good record on the surface considering she has won 2 WTA titles. Unfortunately for Johanna Larsson, her record of grass is very poor and it seems unlikely that she will be able to turn her form around on a surface on which she has not done well in the past.
Johanna Larsson and Kiki Bertens have played each other twice in the past. Both Larsson and Bertens have won on 1 occasion each. The most recent match between these two players was in 2017 at WTA Gstaad where Bertens won in straight sets. Johanna Larsson’s win against Kiki Bertens was in 2015.
Johanna Larsson brings great experience but the Swede has been tragically out of form and she is now playing on a surface on which she has had very limited success. Kiki Bertens was in incredible form during the clay season and she has the advantage of playing at home. With that in mind, I am picking Kiki Bertens to win this match and make it into the second round of the tournament.
