Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

Kiki Bertens will take on Luksika Kumkhum in the opening round of the 2018 WTA Korea Open.

Luksika Kumkhum enters this tournament having played the WTA Japan Open where she made it into the second round of the tournament. Kumkhum was beaten by Wang Qiang in a match where the Thai player struggled to hold serve. Luksika Kumkhum had her serve broken on 4 occasions and that made it very hard for her to put any pressure on her opponent. Luksika Kumkhum is more commonly seen in ITF tournaments where she has done well although her performances at the WTA level shows that she has not been able to cope well with the higher standards. This will be a tough match for Luksika Kumkhum as she is playing the world number 12.

Kiki Bertens won the WTA Cincinnati Masters but failed to continue that form at the US Open as she was eliminated in the third round. It has been a very strong 2018 for Kiki Bertens as she has done very well in many tournaments including two WTA title wins and 2nd place performance. Furthermore, Bertens has also won a doubles tournament this season. This will be another great chance for Kiki Bertens to do well and considering she is the number 2 seed, she has a relatively easy draw which she will look to capitalize.

This will be the first time that Luksika Kumkhum and Kiki Bertens will play each other at a WTA event.

All in all, I am going to pick Kiki Bertens to win this match. Bertens is a much better player than Luksika Kumkhum as can be seen by the relative rankings where there is a difference of more than 80 places. Luksika Kumkhum has struggled against top WTA players in the past and I see that continuing in this match. I see Kiki Bertens winning with ease.
