Kiki Bertens and Maria Sharapova meet in the quarterfinals of the 2018 tennis Madrid Masters.
Kiki Bertens is coming off a straight sets win over Caroline Wozniacki that took 16 games to decide. In the victory, Bertens won 79 percent of her first serve points and 50 percent of her second serve points. Bertens cruised in her match against a top player in the world, as she won 52 percent of her return points and broke five times. It was one of the better performances we’ve seen from Bertens recently, but she’s proven over the years just how dominant she can be on clay court. Bertens has had a field day with the return this tournament and has to be riding high with confidence right now. Bertens hopes to make the semifinal of a Premier Mandatory for the first time in her career. Bertens has won nine straight matches on clay court.
Maria Sharapova is coming off a straight sets win over Kristina Mladenovic that took 19 games to decide. In the victory, Sharapova won 75 percent of her first serve points and 59 percent of her second serve points. Sharapova reaches her first quarterfinal of the season and is fresh off a match in which she won 44 percent of her return points. Sharapova has yet to drop a set this tournament and is playing some of her most consistent tennis of the season, as she came into this event in extremely shaky form. Maybe this is the turning point for Sharapova, who turned 31 years old about a month ago. Sharapova hopes to make the semifinals of a Premier Mandatory for the first time since the 2015 Italian Open. Sharapova has a shot at her fourth career semifinal appearance in the Madrid Masters. Sharapova has won eight of her last 11 matches on clay court.
These two have never played before on the tennis court.
Sharapova is always worth a look when she’s playing well, but there’s no betting against Bertens in her current form. Bertens is consistently solid on clay and just shredded Wozniacki without breaking a sweat. Sharapova still has the occasional hiccup in her game due to a lack of consistent playing time.
Bertens is the safe play here.
