Aaron Doster-USA TODAY Sports

Kiki Bertens and Marketa Vondrousova meet in the third round of the 2018 tennis US Open.

Kiki Bertens is coming off a straight sets win over Francesca Di Lorenzo that took 15 games to decide. In the victory, Bertens won 74 percent of her first serve points and 50 percent of her second serve points. Bertens won 65 percent of her total service points and broke on six of her 16 break points. Bertens is now the the hottest player in the draw, as she’s won 15 of her last 17 matches and 21 of her last 26 sets. As long as Bertens continues her success with her first serve, she gives herself a chance to compete with just about anybody in the remaining tournament. Bertens hopes to make the fourth round of a grand slam for the fourth time in her career. Bertens has never made the fourth round of the US Open. Bertens has won eight straight matches on hard court.

Marketa Vondrousova is coming off a straight sets win over Eugenie Bouchard that took 19 games to decide. In the victory, Vondrousova won 60 percent of her first serve points and 45 percent of her second serve points. Vondrousova won 50 percent of her return points and produced six breaks on 15 break points. Vondrousova has to be better with her serve and clean up the unforced errors, but the 19-year-old is gaining valuable big tournament experience and has to be happy with where she’s at overall. Vondrousova has a chance to win three matches in a single tournament for the second time in her last four tries. Vondrousova hopes to make the fourth round of a grand slam for the first time in her career. Vondrousova has split her last four matches on hard court.

There’s no previous matches between these two players.

Around this time in grand slams is where the tiers start to separate themselves and the surprises get bounced. Vondrousova has gained much needed big tournament experience, but she’s not serving well enough to beat a top-20 player and those hiccups in her game will be much more costly. Not to mention Bertens is the hottest player on tour right now with eight straight wins and has been serving at a very high level.

Bertens cruises in straight sets.
