Kiki Bertens and Venus Williams meet in the second round of the 2019 tennis Cincinnati Open.
Kiki Bertens is coming off a two match exit in Toronto and enters this tournament winning seven of her last 10 matches. Bertens is coming off a performance where she won just 58 percent of her total service points and had 10 double faults. Bertens has struggled with her second serve at times throughout the year and a combined 15 double faults in her last two losses doesn’t help. The good news is Bertens hasn’t lost an opening match since Dubai back in February. Bertens is also the defending champion at Cincinnati and her 70 percent winning percentage is her best of any Premier 5 tournament. Bertens has split her last six matches on hard court.
Venus Williams is coming off a straight sets win over Lauren Davis that took 20 games to decide. In the victory, Venus won 71 percent of her first serve points and 57 percent of her second serve points. Venus won 66 percent of her total service points and converted on four of her six break points. Venus got 60 percent of her first serves in play, saved seven of her eight break points and hit four aces. Eight of Venus’ last nine completed victories have been decided in straight sets. Venus looks to win back-to-back matches for the first time since Birmingham back in June. Venus has split her last eight matches on hard court.
These two have split the previous two matches, as Bertens won 2018 Wimbledon and Venus won 2018 Miami. Both matches were decided in three sets.
Both of these players have been so up and down these last couple of months that it’s hard to trust either of them. However, Bertens is in better form and showed last year just how comfortable she is on these courts. Venus looked good in her opening match, but she has these matches where she can’t serve and is an unforced error machine.
I like Bertens to get the job done here.
