The Line: -- Over/Under:
Kristina Mladenovic and Ekaterina Makarova meet in the fourth round of the 2015 US Open.
Kristina Mladenovic is coming off a straight sets win over Daria Kasatkina and has played six sets this tournament. Mladenovic is winning at least 72 percent of her first serve points and 44 percent of her second serve points. Mladenovic has combined for 14 aces, 55 winners and 44 unforced errors in her first three matches. Mladenovic is getting no more than 60 percent of her first serves in play and must improve that percentage if she hopes to stick around. Still, Mladenovic has breezed through the competition up to this point. Mladenovic has never reached the quarterfinals of a grand slam. This fourth round appearance of a grand slam will be a first for Mladenovic.
Ekaterina Makarova is coming off a straight sets win over Elina Svitolina and has played just six sets this tournament. Makarova is winning at least 60 percent of her first serve points and 36 percent of her second serve points. Makarova has combined for six aces, 63 winners and 44 unforced errors in her first three matches. Makarova is coming off a match in which she hit 41 winners and seems to be getting better each match. However, Makarova could certainly improve her service game if she hopes to make a deeper run. Makarova has reached the quarterfinals of a major three times since 2014. A win here would make three straight US Open quarterfinals appearances for Makarova.
These two have met twice in the past, and Makarova has won both meetings. The most recent match was in this years Rome Masters. Both matches have gone three sets and this will be the second time they meet on hard court.
Mladenovic has played Makarova well in the past, but this is the point of the tournament where I value experience. Makarova has that in spades and is also making far less errors this tournament. Give me Makarova to advance.
