Kristina Mladenovic and Elise Mertens square off in the quarterfinals at the 2016 Ricoh Open.
Kristina Mladenovic is coming off a three set win over Natalia Vikhlyantseva that took 31 games to decide. Mladenovic had to battle back after dropping the first set and played a lot longer match than needed against a top-200 player. Mladenovic has been in decent form overall, as she’s won seven of her last nine matches and was able to push Serena Williams in the third round of the French Open. Maybe the close call will be good for Mladenovic, who has a chance to inch closer to her second career final appearance. Mladenovic hopes to make her second semifinal appearance this season. Mladenovic has won 10 of her last 13 matches on grass court.
Elise Mertens is coming off a straight sets win over Aleksandra Krunic that took 23 games to decide. Mertens is starting to turn some heads, as she hasn’t dropped a set this tournament and upset Eugenie Bouchard in the first round. Mertens has been great with her return game and is clearly starting to gain confidence during this mini run she’s on. At just 20 years old, this is probably the most success Mertens has had on the WTA level. Mertens has another chance to really improve in the rankings if she can pull off another upset here. Mertens hopes to reach her first semifinal on the WTA level. Mertens has won her last four matches on grass court.
This will be the first time these two meet on the tennis court.
You almost want to pick Mertens for the upset given the way Mladenovic looked in her last match. However, Mladenovic’s ability to dig deep and fight back shows just how much she wants to win this tournament. Add the overall talent and experience factor, and Mladenovic should win this match.
Give me Mladenovic in straight sets.
