Kristina Mladenovic and Petra Martic meet in the second round of the 2019 tennis French Open.
Kristina Mladenovic is coming off a straight sets win over Fiona Ferro that took 22 games to decide. Mladenovic hopes to make the third round of a grand slam for the third time since 2017. Mladenovic hopes to make the third round of the French Open for the fifth time in her career. Mladenovic has won four of her last five matches on clay court.
Petra Martic is coming off a straight sets win over Ons Jabeur that took 15 games to decide. In the victory, Martic won 68 percent of her first serve points and 35 percent of her second serve points. Martic won 56 percent of her total service points and converted on six of her 10 break points. Martic got 65 percent of her first serves in play and won eight of the last 10 games to close the match out in just over an hour. Martic has been impressive on clay all year long, and she has to like her chances for an even deeper run as long as she continues to return the way she did in her opening match. Martic hopes to make the third round of a grand slam for the fifth time since 2017. Martic has won 10 of her last 12 matches on clay court.
These two hav played three times and Martic has won two of those matches, including the most recent this year in Istanbul. Mladenovic’s only win over Martic came in 2013 Quebec City. The last two meetings were decided in straight sets.
Mladenovic has had some of her most consistent grand slam success at the French Open and will have the home crowd behind her, which always helps. However, Martic has been highly impressive on clay all year and just beat Mladenovic on this surface last month. Martic has been the much more consistent player these last several tournaments and should be able to win a lot of points with her return.
