Laura Siegemund and Belinda Bencic meet in the second round of the 2019 tennis French Open.
Laura Siegemund is coming off a straight sets win over Sofya Zhuk that took 18 games to decide. In the victory, Siegemund won 71 percent of her first serve points and 65 percent of her second serve points. Siegemund won 69 percent of her total service points and converted on four of her eight break points. Siegemund got 61 percent of her first serves in play and saved two of her three break points. It was a solid and clean performance from the German that included just eight unforced errors, and Siegemund gives herself a chance of advancing even further if she can keep that number extremely low. Siegemund hopes to make the third round of a grand slam for the third time in her career. Siegemund has won six of her last eight matches on clay court.
Belinda Bencic is coming off a straight sets win over Jessika Ponchet that took 17 games to decide. In the victory, Bencic won 63 percent of her first serve points and 69 percent of her second serve points. Bencic won 65 percent of her total service points and converted on five of her eight break points. Bencic got 63 percent of her first serves in play and had 30 winners to just 10 unforced errors. Bencic did a wonderful job of controlling the pace and spraying the ball across the court for impressive winners. It was one of the few easier matches Bencic has had on clay this year and one that should give her a boatload of confidence. Bencic hopes to make the third round of a grand slam for the ninth time in her career and the first time ever in the French Open. Bencic has won six of her last eight matches on clay court.
These two have played once, which was an ITF match in 2013, a meeting Siegemund won in straight sets. The match took 18 games to be decided.
Siegemund played a very clean match in her opener and that’s encouraging, but she’s also been terrible with her serve when stepping up in competition. There’s been recent matches from Siegemund where she wins less than 50 percent of her total service points and gets nothing on her second serve. Bencic just had a field day with the return and has the power to pile up free points if those weak serves from Siegemund pop up. This feels like a match that heavily favors Bencic, one of the more consistent players of 2019.
Look for Bencic to reach the third round of the French Open for the first time.
