Clay-court veteran, Leonardo Mayer, meets rising star, Lorenzo Sonego in the first-round of the 2020 Rio Open.

Lorenzo Sonego is one of the most exciting clay court players from 2019. Sonego is tall, has a big serve and he loves playing on clay. Sonego won his maiden ATP Title in 2019 and if he is able to find the form which made him stand out in 2019, he can definitely win more in 2020. Sonego is a motivated player, and he is extremely passionate. These traits allow Sonego to be a tough opponent for anyone as he will always leave it all out on the court. Sonego has a great mentality and he will have a very successful career on the ATP Tour.

Leonardo Mayer is one of the more experienced players on the tour, especially on clay. Mayer knows how to play on clay, he knows what wins points, and what loses points. Mayer will want to take advantage of his last few years where he will be able to be physically fit to play fast tennis and he will want to win titles in 2020. However, it has been a while since we have seen Mayer being at his best. The peak of his 2019 season was when he nearly won a set against Rafael Nadal in Monte-Carlo, but even that was against a Nadal who wasn't 100% fit. Mayer will need to drastically improve his game if he wants to challenge anywhere this year.

This will be the second meeting between both players, with Mayer having one the prior encounter. This will be a tight first-round match here in Rio and Mayer can definitely win it with his experience and knowledge of clay-court tennis, however, I do not see this happening this time. Sonego is determined to make an even bigger name for himself and his best tennis is yet to come. Sonego will come out strong and make it to the second-round.

Lorenzo Sonego to win.
