Lorenzo Sonego meets Borna Coric in the quarterfinals of the 2020 Rio de Janeiro Open.
Lorenzo Sonego put on a solid performance against Dusan Lajovic, coming down a break in both sets to win it 7-6/7-6. Sonego was great on serve, his forehand was impeccable, and his mentality was even better than both of those. Sonego showed us the tennis which made him win his first title in 2019. Sonego loves playing on clay, he performs incredibly well on the surface as it allows him to move quickly around the court and his shots bounce better on the dirt. Sonego will want to reach the semifinals here in Rio and if he plays like he did against Lajovic he has a real chance.
Borna Coric came through an extremely hard-fought match against home crowd favourite, Thiago Seyboth Wild. Wild was loving the energy he was getting from the crowd, and what should have been an easy straight sets victory for Coric became a tough three set match which went to the final set tiebreak. Coric was great in the really difficult moments, saving 9 out of 12 break points and winning 75% of his first serve points. Coric is still young and can improve his game a lot, if he does he will be incredible on clay as he is so good when confident.
This will be the first meeting between both players and this will be a very close match. Both players are playing on their favourite surface and they know how to win. Although Coric is the more experienced player, Sonego was more convincing in his win over a tougher opponent. Sonego seems to be confident and more determined than Coric.
Lorenzo Sonego to win.
