Lucas Pouille vs Alexei Popyrin - 01/19/19 ATP Tour - Australian Open Pick, Odds, and Prediction

Aaron Doster-USA TODAY Sports

The number 28 seed from France, Lucas Pouille will face Australian wildcard, Alexei Popyrin during the third round of the 2019 ATP Australian Open in Melbourne.

Alexei Popyrin had a big win in the previous round as she eliminated world number 8, Dominic Thiem. It was a very strong performance by Popyrin as he won the opening 2 sets before Thiem retired during the third set. During the win, Alexei Popyrin served exceptionally well as he hit 13 aces while winning over 70% of the points played during his serve. Alexei Popyrin won 100% of his service games which made it very tough for Dominic Thiem to compete. It is fair to note that Dominic Thiem was not 100% fit which made it easier for Alexei Popyrin to dominate the match. Alexei Popyrin has received exceptional support throughout the tournament as he is playing in his home country. The support is expected to continue for Popyrin in this match.

On the other side of the court, Lucas Pouille has looked very impressive in this tournament. Pouille won his previous match in 4 sets. In his previous match, Lucas Pouille served exceptionally well as he hit 11 aces which allowed him to win 96% of his service games. Leading up to the Australian Open, Pouille has been in very poor form as he has struggled at his last few tournaments. This will be a tough match for Lucas Pouille as he is playing an opponent who is high of confidence and has the home crowd behind him.

All in all, I am going to pick Alexei Popyrin to win this match. Having recently beaten Dominic Thiem, Alexei Popyrin looks to be full of confidence. Furthermore, Alexei Popyrin is playing at home which means he will get full support from the crowd. With all these factors in his favour, I see Alexei Popyrin continuing his dream run at the Australian Open.
