Lucie Safarova and Petra Kvitova play Wednesday night in the WTA Championships.

Lucie Safarova needs a win here after losing to Garbine Muguruza in her first match. Safarova has now lost five straight singles matches, three of which have come in straight sets. Safarova is simply not hitting the ball well with any consistency and is struggling with her return game, as she continues to lose close matches. Safarova is winning just 34.6 percent of her first serve return points this season but 51.8 percent of her return points overall. Safarova has to be a little more aggressive and go for her shots if she’s going to bounce back with an impressive victory here. Safarova is double dipping in Singapore, so fatigue is certainly a factor with her as well.

Petra Kvitova is coming off a straight sets loss to Angelique Kerber, so she needs a win as well. Kvitova has lost four of her last five matches, and the last three have come in straight sets. Kvitova clearly hasn’t been the same person since losing in the quarterfinals of the US Open and needs to regain her confidence. Kvitova is getting broken a lot and making way too many unforced errors as of late. Still, we all know what Kvitova is capable of, especially in this tournament given that she’s won the title back in 2011. Kvitova just must find that next gear that she’s lacked since playing in New York a couple of months ago. Kvitova has been eliminated in the round robin stages of the WTA Tour Championships twice in the last three years.

These two have played seven times in the past, and Kvitova has won all seven meetings. The most recent match was in this year’s Connecticut Open, a match that went three sets. Three of the seven matches between Safarova and Kvitova have gone the distance. This will be the fifth time these two meet on hard court.

Both players are struggling, so this could go either way. However, Kvitova is simply the better player than Safarova and already has the mental edge given that she’s won all seven meetings.

Look for the former champ to win this match.
