The Line: -- Over/Under:
Madison Keys and Ashleigh Barty meet in the quarterfinals of the 2019 tennis French Open.
Madison Keys is coming off a straight sets win over Katerina Siniakova that took 18 games to decide. In the victory, Keys won 66 percent of her first serve points and 54 percent of her second serve points. Keys won 62 percent of her total service points and converted on five of her six break points. Keys got 63 percent of her first serves in play and saved five of her seven break points. Keys had 26 winners to 26 unforced errors, so she’s winning despite having just on match this tournament where she’s had more winners than errors. As long as Keys keeps that number within reason, she’s a legit threat to anybody in this field due to her ability to take the racket out of her opponents hands. Keys hopes to make her fifth career grand slam semifinal and second straight at the French Open. Keys is 4-2 in career grand slam quarterfinal matches. Keys has won five of her last six matches on clay court.
Ashleigh Barty is coming off a three sets win over Sofia Kenin that took 24 games to decide. In the victory, Barty won 77 percent of her first serve points and 50 percent of her second serve points. Barty won 67 percent of her total service points and converted on five of her 11 break points. Barty got 64 percent of her first serves in play and saved two of her four break points while hitting 11 aces. Barty had just 17 unforced errors in the victory and has won eight of her nine sets this tournament due to playing such clean tennis. Barty won each of the last six games to close the set, which has to give the Aussie a new level of confidence moving forward. Barty looks for her first career grand slam semifinal appearance. Barty lost her only other grand slam quarterfinal match, which came this year in the Australian Open. Barty has won eight of her last 10 matches on clay court.
These two have split their previous two meetings, as Barty won this year in the Fed Cup and Keys won in the 2017 French Open. Both matches were decided in straight sets.
Barty clearly has the ability to win this match based on her consistently keeping her errors down and just beating Keys a few months ago, while losing a combined five games. The problem is Barty doesn’t control many points and is a finesse player who relies on slices and drop shots. It’s pretty and effective when it works, but it just feels like a mismatch when going up against somebody like Keys, who can use angles and power, forcing Barty to do a lot of running and taking away some of that creativeness. As long as Keys limits her unforced errors, she should win this match.
I like Keys to make her fifth career grand slam semifinal.
