Madison Keys and Dominika Cibulkova meet in the second match of the tennis 2016 WTA Championships.
Madison Keys is coming off a straight sets loss to Simona Halep that took 18 games to decide. In the losing effort, Keys won 58 percent of her first serve points and 45 percent of her second serve points. Keys also won just 30 percent of her return points, numbers that simply won’t get it done against some of the best players in the world. However, Keys is always a mixed bag in terms of results and it simply comes down to how effective she can be with her serve and how many unforced errors she’s going to rack up. Keys has the power to overwhelm anyone, but she must learn to control that power and not be so sloppy. Win or lose, this experience will be great for the young American Keys. Keys has won six of her last nine matches on hard court.
Dominika Cibulkova is coming off a three sets loss to Angelique Kerber that took 30 games to decide. In the losing effort, Cibulkova won 65 percent of her first serve points and 48 percent of her second serve points. Cibulkova certainly had her chances against the top player in the world after taking Kerber to a first set tiebreak and winning the second set, 6-2. Finishing matches has given Cibulkova trouble in the past, but she’s still in this tournament considering she was able to win a set. Cibulkova is one of the best competitors in women’s tennis and certainly isn’t going to go down quietly. The one concern with Cibulkova is obviously her weak second serve, as most quality opponents are able to eat it up on the return. Cibulkova has won six of her last 10 matches on hard court.
These two have played three times in the past and Keys has won all three meetings. The most recent match took place in the 2015 Brisbane International, a match Keys won in 20 games. Keys has won five of six sets played against Cibulkova.
The head to head doesn’t tell you much considering these two haven’t played this year and only one match overall since the 2015 season. However, Keys power game could give Cibulkova trouble, especially on the second serve return. Keys should be able to get a lot of free points in this match and won’t have to play so many rallies. I like this matchup for Keys and see her winning her first WTA Finals match.
