American tennis superstar, Madison Keys has made it into the third round of the 2019 WTA Charleston Open where she will play against Jeļena Ostapenko from Latvia.
Madison Keys had a close win in the opening round as she beat Tatjana Maria in 3 sets. Madison Keys won the opening set via a tiebreaker but lost the second set 6-4. Keys showed great composure to win the final set 6-4 and take the win. Keys served well during the win as she won close to 70% of her service points which allowed her to 81% of her service games. This will be a tougher match for Madison Keys as her opponent is much stronger.
On the other side of the coin, Jeļena Ostapenko also won her previous match in 3 sets. It was a tight contest where Ostapenko lost the opening set but fought back strongly to win the final 2 sets and the match. During the win, Jeļena Ostapenko returned serve exceptionally well as she won over 50% of her receiving points which resulted in her winning 7 break points.
Madison Keys and Jeļena Ostapenko have played once in the past. The match was played in 2016 at WTA Birmingham where Madison Keys won in 3 sets.
Madison Keys has looked decent throughout this tournament and she has been a big favourite for the crowd. That being said, I am picking Keys to lose and Ostapenko to win. Both these players are very evenly matched but I see Jeļena Ostapenko being the stronger player on clay. Jeļena Ostapenko has won the French Open and she is an exceptional clay court player. Madison Keys is more suited to hard courts and grass courts and I see her struggling on the clay. With that in mind, I see Jeļena Ostapenko winning this match and making the quarterfinals.
