Madison Keys and Kristina Kucova square off in the semifinals of the 2016 Rogers Cup.
Madison Keys is coming off a three set win over Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova that took 26 games. Keys has found her rhythm ever since winning the AEGON Classic title and has won 15 of her last 17 titles overall. Keys is hitting the ball with confidence, spraying winners across the court and is playing like she believes she’s a top-10 player in the world. At just 21 years old, it seems like the United States has somebody who can represent with Serena Williams getting older. Keys looks for her third final appearance this season and has won four of her last five semifinal appearances. Keys has won 10 of her last 13 matches on hard court.
Kristina Kucova is coming off a straight sets win over Johanna Konta that took games to decide. Kucova has been the surprise of this tournament, as she’s now beaten four straight top-50 players and has a chance to win her biggest match yet. At 26 years old, Kucova hasn’t had much WTA success at all but clearly has the attention from everybody at this very moment. The one thing to worry about with Kucova are the obvious nerves considering she’s never been on this stage before. Kucova looks to reach her first WTA final and has won five of her last six semifinal appearances overall. Kucova has won eight of her last 10 matches on hard court.
This will be the first time these two meet on the tennis court.
Kucova deserves respect and shouldn’t be doubted given what she’s done to get to this point. However, Keys is finally starting to play to her potential and sees another title within reach. Given the overall talent and experience gap, you have to side with the American in this match.
Give me Keys in straight sets. However, it’s been a successful tournament for Kucova regardless.
