Madison Keys and Monica Puig meet in the third round of the 2016 French Open.
Madison Keys is coming off a straight sets win over Mariana Duque-Marino that took 17 games to decide. In the victory, Keys won 70 percent of her first serve points and 75 percent of her second serve points. Keys has lost just 10 games in her first two matches and a lot of it has to do with her shotmaking and high percentage service game. Keys is hitting the ball well and has committed 36 unforced errors in her first two matches. As long as Keys is playing within herself and allowing her power to takeover, she’s a force and a dark horse to make a run in this tournament. Keys hopes to make the fourth round of a grand slam in her fourth straight appearance.
Monica Puig is coming off a three set win over Julia Goerges that took 37 games to decide. In the victory, Puig won 78 percent of her first serve points and 44 percent of her second serve points. Puig is coming off a lengthy match that forced both players to win seven games to win the set. Puig has combined for 62 winners in this tournament and has won an extremely high percentage of points when she gets her first serve in play. Puig has done a good job of keeping her unforced errors down and has shown how good she can be, but she must be more consistent with her service game in order to advance. Puig hopes to make her second grand slam fourth round of her career and first since the 2013 Wimbledon.
These two have played three times in the past, and Puig leads the series, 2-1. The most recent match was in the 2014 Wimbledon, a match Keys won in straight sets. The other two matches took place in the 2014 Strasbourg Open and 2013 French Open. All three matches have been decided in straight sets.
You have to like Keys to win this match, as her power is sure to give Puig issues. Keys will also be able to take advantage of Puig’s second serve, something that gave her issues in her last match.
Look for the American to advance to the fourth round.
