Mandy Minella and Marketa Vondrousova meet in the semifinals of the 2018 tennis Swiss Open.

Mandy Minella is coming off a straight sets win over Sara Sorribes Tormo that took 15 games to decide. In the victory, Minella won 58 percent of her first serve points and 52 percent of her second serve points. Minella won 72 percent of her return points and converted on seven of her 12 break chances. Minella must serve better if she hopes to continue to make a run in this tournament, but her return skills have produced a combined 13 breaks in her last three matches. While much of her tennis success at 32 years old has taken place on the small scale and in doubles play, this has a chance to be a breakthrough tournament in terms of singles success. Minella has a chance to make her first ever WTA singles final appearance. Minella has won four of her last six matches on clay court.

Marketa Vondrousova is coming off a straight sets win over Evgeniya Rodina that took 17 games to decide. In the victory, Vondrousova won 74 percent of her first serve points and 48 percent of her second serve points. Vondrousova has yet to drop a set this tournament and is coming off a match in which she won 63 percent of her total service points and broke on all five of her break chances. Vondrousova is easily playing some of her best tennis right now, as it wasn’t that long ago when she was riding a five-match losing streak. As long as Vondrousova continues to serve the way she has and limits the break chances, she should be fine. Vondrousova has a chance to make her second career final appearance and first since last years Ladies Open Biel Bienne. Vondrousova has won four of her last five matches on clay court.

This will be the first ever match between these two players.

Minella is worth a shot here considering this may be her last chance to reach a WTA singles final given that she’s 32 years old. However, Minella has struggled with her serve big time and that usually doesn’t work against better players in the draw. At 19 years old, Vondrousova has shown flashes of being a top-50 player and has her serve working for her currently. Minella can’t win this match unless she drastically improves that serve.

I like Vondrousova to win this match.
