Marco Cecchinato and David Goffin meet in the second round of the 2019 tennis Miami Open.

Marco Cecchinato is coming off a walkover win over Damir Dzumhur, as he was forced to retire due to back pain. Cecchinato will have a major rest advantage considering he hasn’t had to play a match in over two weeks due to an early exit in Indian Wells. However, there’s also reason for concern when you consider Cecchinato hasn’t exactly been the most consistent player in the world these past few months, and he’s had little to no recent success on hard courts. Maybe some reps would have been good for the struggling Italian. Cecchinato has a chance to make the fourth round of a Masters 1000 for the first time in his career. Cecchinato has lost four of his last five matches on outdoor hard court.

David Goffin is coming off a straight sets win over Pablo Andujar-Alba that took 17 games to decide. In the victory, Goffin won 76 percent of her first serve points and 33 percent of her second serve points. Goffin won 61 percent of his total service points and converted on five of his 10 break points. Goffin easily had his best performance of the year, as this has been a sluggish start to the season for him, that’s included early exits and a recent stop in challenger play. Of course, it shouldn’t be that surprising considering Goffin has had some decent success in Masters 1000 events. Goffin hopes to make the fourth round of the Miami Open for the fourth time in his last five appearances. Goffin has split his last six matches on outdoor hard court.

These two have played three times and Goffin has won two of those matches. The most recent match was in the 2018 French Open, a match Cecchinato won in four sets. This will be the first time these two meet on hard court.

Cecchinato is not comfortable at all on hard court and has had almost zero recent success on the surface. Goffin ha quietly racked up a decent winning percentage in Miami and has the history of deep runs in Masters 1000 events. So, while Goffin has been struggling to start the year and isn’t the most trustworthy in his current form, this is a match he should have the edge in based on experience.

Goffin rolls to the fourth round.

Pick:
David Goffin
